November is National Bone Marrow Awareness Month. On Sunday, celebrities joined more than 600 guests at The Liberty Theater in Times Square to help those in need of a bone marrow transplant find their perfect match. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.
Stars strolled down the red carpet at The Liberty Theater Sunday for The Marrow Match Gala to support the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation. The Gift of Life helps patients with leukemia, lymphoma -- or any other cancer or genetic disease -- find their lifesaving match.
"I had a friend that went through this and had a transplant and it saved her life so I...it's a really relevant issue," said "Blue Bloods" Actress Sami Gayle.
Currently, the Gift of Life has thousands of swab kits waiting to be processed and added to the international bone marrow registry. Once someone gets swabbed it costs $60 to process that kit.
"It's very difficult for people who are dying of this to find a match, even sometimes within their own family. So the more of us that do it the more people will live," said Gala Host and "Gossip Girl" Actress Kelly Rutherford.
NY1's Jessica Abo organized the event and produced a celebrity music video to help spread the word.
"My friends lost their daughter, Ayelet Galena, when she was two years old. And for so many people who need a bone marrow transplant finding a perfect match is their only hope," Abo said.
Ayelet's parents presented the Ayelet Galena Courage Award to Ezra Fineman. It also went to 6-year-old Dylan Rabinovich who is living with a rare chromosome disease called Emanuel Syndrome.
The Gift of Life Pillar of Strength Award was presented to Jill Hollander.
Guests were asked to bring items for a Sandy relief drive which will support storm victims on Staten Island.
